Mission to Mars

At Avila Year 9 students have the opportunity to select the Astro science stream. This offers the core science units with an additional Astronomy unit which includes a space mission simulation and time spent in class constructing and coding robotic devices. This week our Year 9 Astro students went on their Mission to Mars!

Working together as a team, they completed a geological survey of the Mars surface. After collecting their equipment and de-pressurising in the airlock they stepped out onto the Martian surface to collect real soil and rock samples, drill an ice core, conduct a thermal survey and measure seismic activity. The students in Mission Control were monitoring the Astronauts’ vital signs, equipment and environmental conditions while communicating via radio to the astronauts on the surface.
