We believe the following elements contribute to making the transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible:
Knowing
our students
The Year 7 co-ordinator liaises with Year 6 teachers from the schools
of our new students. Also, parents are asked to provide information about
their daughter's strengths and their expectations and concerns. This is
collected by way of a questionnaire distributed at the Year 7 Information
Night.
Knowing
the school
Orientation Day enables students to meet their classmates, homeroom and
other teachers, and familiarise themselves with the subjects.
The Year 7s spend a half day at school on their first day. They are greeted
at the gates by Year 10 peer helpers who help them find their class rooms
and answer questions.
Making
friends
Friendship skills are actively promoted. Friendship Day is held in the
first week of Term One and focuses on activities that help teach the skills
of how to make a friend.
The Year 7 camp in Term Two provides excellent opportunities for students
to move outside the security of their own circle and meet others.
Integrated
curriculum
Many of the homeroom teachers also teach one of the subjects in the General
Studies program which incorporates English, Studies of Society and the
Environment (SOSE), Information Technology and Media studies. This dual
role enables Year 7 homeroom teachers to get to know their students both
academically and personally much more quickly.
