Reconciliation
If you have come to help me then you are wasting your time. But, if you
have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work
together.
Oodgeroo Noonuccal (1920-1993), poet and Aboriginal activist
In true Avila tradition, the Reconciliation Group was started in 1998 as a student initiative and continues to be been driven by the enthusiasm of students and their concern for others. It has been, and still is, an exciting journey of discovery.
Our
aims include:
- Learning about indigenous culture, the.issues
of Reconciliation and our true history
as Australians.
- Raising awareness in the school
community. Do you know that Avila
is on Wurundjeri land?
- Organising speakers, performers, excursions, film nights,
and displays for the wider
Avila community.
- Raising money to support indigenous organisations. In recent years the College community raised $6000 at a concert and silent auction to support the Akeyulerre Healing Centre in Alice Springs. This centre has been developed by, and for, the Arrernte community, some of whom are past Avila students. We also made a donation to Keeping Koori Kids in Education, an initiative of the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry in Victoria.
- Each year a group of Year 10 students and staff spend their Term 3 break helping out at the Santa Teresa Mission near Alice Springs. The mission is extremely grateful for the extra helping hands and donation of resources, and without fail, the Avila visitors come away feeling indebted themselves for such a life-changing opportunity. See Santa Teresa's Mission for more information.
