Middle School (Years 8 and 9)
Years 8 and 9 are considered to be the Middle School years at Avila when students are given increasing responsibility for their learning. In Year 8, students choose to specialise in one of the three languages (French, Italian or Indonesian) that they have experienced in Year 7. They continue a broad study of all disciplines which is further enriched by excursions or visiting specialists. In Year 9, personal choice and responsibility for learning are emphasised more. This is in keeping with research that shows adolescents learn better when they feel they are involved in the path their studies take. The belief in achievement through effort is accentuated. Exams commence in Year 9 for English and Mathematics; as does community service and outdoor education.
The Year 9 camp is a vital part of the curriculum and helps reinforce the belief in achievement through effort. Through well supervised outdoor pursuits, students are challenged to move outside their comfort zones and extend themselves mentally and physically. They often surprise themselves with their accomplishments and this forms a lifelong basis for future challenges. Much of what is learned at camp can be transferred back to the classroom setting. Greater self confidence, the importance of having a go and perseverance are reinforced in the classroom. The student leadership program offers opportunities to experience responsibility in a range of fields.
