Mellica's Mission
Mellica’s Mission in India has been part of the Avila tradition for more than 30 years.
The mission was established by past student Mellica Campbell in 1977.
Mellica had been diagnosed with a brain tumour the previous year and wanted to turn her suffering into something positive. She wanted to help give the poor a sense of hope for their future. To that end, she established a mission in India with donations from people who would have otherwise brought her gifts and flowers. Tragically, Mellica passed away on January 30, 1978, at the age of 18. But her dream has continued to thrive thanks to the determination of her family and the Avila community.
Fund raising for Mellica’s Mission has become a Year 9 responsibility and one greatly assisted by Mellica's mother, Mrs Kath Campbell, who has baked cakes for the cake stalls every year.
