MATHEMATICS
Mathematics is an essential part of the program of studies from years 7
to Year 12 at Avila.
We strive to make Mathematics a positive
experience for students so they can develop confidence and a sense of power
from what they learn.
We encourage students to understand and appreciate the nature of mathematical
thinking and to be aware of the processes by which mathematics changes.
We also help students gain an understanding of the dynamic role of mathematics
in social and technological change.
Our students are actively involved in acquiring the mathematical skills and knowledge necessary for them to deal confidently and competently with daily life. They are given the opportunity and support to communicate quantitative and logical ideas clearly and precisely through a diverse range of learning activities.
At Year 7, an intensive numeracy skills program forms part of the course.
A highlight of the Year 8 course is a special day in which students apply the skills and concepts they have learned in the classroom to solve problems and explore the links between mathematics and real life scenarios.
In years 9 and 10, we offer an extension program to students who would benefit from a more challenging and faster paced curriculum. This course is designed to allow students to develop broader skills and to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts.
In Year 11, we offer General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, General Mathematics Specialist, and VCAL Numeracy. Students also have the option of picking up VCE units 3 and 4 in Further Mathematics.
In Year 12, students can pursue Mathematics through Further Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Maths.
Beyond the classroom, tutorial sessions are available for students to further develop their skills and understanding of concepts.
In addition to the prescribed coursework, students can explore the many facets of Mathematics by participating
in Maths Week activities and taking part in the Australian Mathematics Competition. They can also independently explore their own mathematical interests by entering
The Math Talent Quest.
