ENGLISH
Avila’s English program aims to develop confidence in the ability of students to use the English language in order to communicate ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
The program encourages students to think critically and reflectively and enrich their own experience through reading and considering texts that give insights into the lives of others.
English is an integral part of the Year 7 General Studies program. In Year 7, students are guided in the appropriate and effective use of English skills through texts, fiction and non-fiction, discussion and a wide range of written genres. In addition, a term-long unit of Oral English provides an introduction to the skills of public speaking.
In Year 8, students focus on texts to explore ideas about culture, settings and the art of story telling. A variety of genres are taught in writing which is supplemented by grammar lessons.
Literacy and Vocational Skills classes are offered to those who need extra assistance in this subject.
Year 9 English covers the study of a contemporary novel, film, poetry, short stories and wider reading. Students are challenged to explore ideas such as, does the end justify the means, and, does love conquer all?
Year 10 English covers the study of a Shakespearean play, a film text, poetry and a novel study as well as wider reading. Year 10 Literature offers a more challenging range of texts and is designed for students interested in pursuing this study in their VCE years.
Both courses extend students’ critical analysis of language use in the media.
Years 11 and 12 English encourages the extension of language skills and aims to develop a critical understanding and control of the English language. Years 11 and 12 Literature examines the ideas and views of life both in contemporary and classic texts.
Students are offered many opportunities such as attending performances of plays, and participating in The Age Writers’ Festival where they hear authors and illustrators speak about their work. Creative writing competitions, opportunities to have work published, and writers-in-residence programs further stimulate ideas for the creation of written projects. A bi-annual publication, Doorways, features a selection of the best writing from Years 7 to 12.
Avila is well known for its articulate and confident public speakers. Skills in presenting ideas publicly are emphasised constantly through all English classes and through the student leadership program. Students have numerous opportunities to compete in local and state competitions. Avila is a strong and long term member of the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV).
