HUMANITIES
(History/Politics, Geography, Economics)
Humanities is a study of human progress and how people have organised themselves into societies over time, and how they have interacted with their physical environments.
Humanities examines the way humans form communities and states and organise institutions and systems. It provides a framework for developing student knowledge about Australian society past and present, and about Australia’s urban and natural environments.
At Avila College, Humanities encompasses the disciplines of History, Politics, Civics and Geography from Years 7 to 12. Business Studies is introduced at Year 9.
History/Politics
Avila offers a wide range of History and Politics subjects and units. In Year 7, Ancient Societies is studied while Medieval History is explored at Year 8. In years 9 and 10, students examine Australian history and are introduced to a study of the main events and ideas which shaped the twentieth century. Several units provide students with an insight into the history and culture of some countries in South-East Asia and explore Australia’s relations with the region. In Year 10, several VCE units are offered.
Geography
Geography is integrated into General Studies at Year 7 where students explore Egypt and deserts. At Year 8, students investigate South America and rainforests and develop their data gathering and representation skills. From Years 9 to 12, a variety of Geography units are offered. Students learn about the distribution and function of major natural systems, the interaction of human activities with natural systems and, the changing patterns and dynamics of populations. Field trips and excursions are an integral part of all Geography courses. Geography is taught through to Year 12.
Economics
Economics at Avila College comprises the distinct VCE subject disciplines of Accounting, Business Management, Economics and Legal Studies. A compulsory unit at Year 9 explores the workplace, future careers and financial issues.
At Year 10, there are several units covering a range of Economic concepts offered for students. This includes a TAFE certificate in Small Business.
